Basic Pipe Fitting Instructions
Tools and Materials Needed:
Pipes (PVC, steel, copper, etc.)
Pipe cutter or hacksaw
Pipe wrench or adjustable wrench
Pipe threader (for threaded pipes)
Pipe fittings (elbows, tees, couplings, reducers, etc.)
Thread seal tape (Teflon tape) or pipe dope
Measuring tape
Marker
Safety gloves and goggles
Steps for Pipe Fitting
Plan and Measure
Identify the pipe layout and fittings needed.
Measure the lengths of pipe required.
Mark the pipes where cuts will be made.
Cut the Pipe
Use a pipe cutter or hacksaw to cut the pipe to size.
Make sure the cuts are straight and clean.
Deburr (remove rough edges) the cut ends with a file or deburring tool.
Prepare the Pipe Ends
For threaded pipes: Use a pipe threader to add threads to the ends.
For slip-fit or glued pipes (like PVC): Clean and dry the pipe ends.
For welding: Clean the ends of the pipes.
Apply Sealant
For threaded joints: Wrap the male threads with Teflon tape clockwise or apply pipe dope.
For glued joints (PVC): Apply primer and then PVC cement to both pipe and fitting ends.
Assemble the Pipes and Fittings
Join the pipes and fittings together.
For threaded pipes: Screw the fittings onto the pipes tightly using pipe wrenches.
For glued pipes: Push and twist the pipe into the fitting, hold for a few seconds until set.
For welded pipes: Use welding equipment to weld the pipe ends.
Check for Leaks
Once assembled, test the system for leaks by running water or air pressure.
Tighten or reseal if necessary.
Safety Tips
Always wear safety goggles and gloves.
Work in a well-ventilated area if using solvent cement or welding.
Follow manufacturer’s instructions for all materials.
