Brick Laying Work Instruction Purpose:
To ensure proper brick laying technique for constructing strong, level, and durable walls.
Tools and Materials Needed: Bricks
Mortar mix (cement, sand, water)
Trowel
Spirit level
Mason’s line and pins
Tape measure
Hammer and chisel (for cutting bricks)
Bucket for mortar
Brick jointer or pointing tool
Gloves and safety goggles
Preparation:
Surface Preparation
Ensure the foundation or base is level, clean, and free from loose debris.
Mix Mortar
Prepare mortar according to the mix ratio (commonly 1 part cement to 4 parts sand). Mix to a workable consistency (not too dry or too runny).
Set Mason’s Line
Fix pins at each end of the wall length and stretch a mason’s line at the desired height of the first course (row) of bricks to ensure straightness.
Step-by-Step Brick Laying:
Lay the First Course:
Apply a layer of mortar on the foundation (bed joint).
Butter the end of the first brick with mortar.
Place the brick firmly on the mortar bed, aligning it with the mason’s line.
Tap gently with the handle of the trowel to set the brick level.
Lay the next bricks similarly, maintaining even spacing (usually 10mm mortar joints).
Check level and alignment regularly.
Subsequent Courses:
Apply mortar to the top of the previous course (bed joint).
Butter the ends of bricks before placing (perp joints).
Stagger joints between courses (brick bond), e.g., half brick overlap (running bond).
Continue laying bricks row by row, keeping the wall plumb and level using spirit level and mason’s line.
Remove excess mortar and fill any gaps.
Cutting Bricks:
Use hammer and chisel or brick saw to cut bricks to size where necessary.
Pointing and Finishing:
After mortar starts to set, use a jointer tool to smooth and shape the mortar joints.
Clean off any mortar stains on bricks before it hardens.
Safety Precautions:
Wear gloves and goggles to protect hands and eyes.
Handle bricks carefully to avoid injury.
Keep work area clean to prevent slips and trips.
Quality Checks:
Ensure walls are straight, level, and plumb.
Mortar joints should be uniform and fully filled.
Brickwork should be free of cracks or loose bricks.
